A spinoff series from The Office starring Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore gets the official green light.

US streamer Peacock has officially confirmed a new series set 'in the same universe' as the US version of The Office.

The hugely-popular comedy - an adaptation of the UK original - ran for nine seasons between 2005 and 2013, starring the likes of Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski.

A revival of the show has been rumoured for some time and now the project has the official go-ahead, with The Office showrunner Greg Daniels returning alongside Michael Koman to oversee the project.

The lead stars have also been confirmed as acclaimed Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, the breakout star of The White Lotus season two.

A description of the as-yet untitled show reads: "The documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters."

"It's been more than 10 years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock," said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content, at NBCU Entertainment.

"In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper."

Filming on the show is expected to begin in July.
